The internet is cool, once again
I am amazed by the people I am able to find through random online connections. Last week I got an email from pinkribbonsally asking if she could add my breast cancer website to her blogroll. Then, she wrote this post on her blog. Wow! Talk about motivation to keep going. After a while of working on my own, I do feel like a crazy inventor and wonder if I'm making something that really is useful. It's good to know that there are people out there that this project can help!
On the "internet is cool" vein, I'd like to list some of the things that have happened to me because of random communications to/from strangers online:
- Two years ago, I invited a stranger to dinner after he asked me directions to church in my town. At the time he was living in a different country. We're getting married next week!
- I got a scholarship to work on my breast cancer project fulltime, and moved to England.
- A tech entrepreneur saw my breast cancer project online, and emailed me offering to help and showed me the tech mashup challenge, and has given me all sorts of great advice.
- I know what my friends are doing by reading their blogs. Even though I live thousands of miles away, I still am able to be part of their lives, and share mine as well.
- I can call home for 2 cents a minute, and even talk over video for free, thanks Skype! Otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford to call home! And, I get to see my nephews and niece on webcam, which makes Aunt Corri not a total stranger to them. (although I wonder if they think that the girl in the computer can always come to life!)
- I emailed a professor once after reading his biography, and asked if I could meet him to talk about doing an independent study course with him. We ended up being great friends and he gave me a great job at USU and I gained a lot of experience and knowledge with that job.
What cool things have happened to you because of the internet?
